Re: Windows 10 on its own 128 GB SSD - VMware Fusion has paused the virtual machine ...

I think my problem is that the snapshot file is causing my issue. Is it possible to indicate where to save backup snapshots? I don't see a setting for this. They seem to be saved to the same location as where ever the virtual machine file is.

Thanks,

Steve

Doubtfully... but unfortunately after Apple's announcement about dropping VMware due to the licensing costs don't be surprised to see more and more move away from it. The web client is a whole other nightmare I don't care to get into, but since you bring it up, a piece of crap is a piece of crap, and anyone who stands over it and says they like the smell is a fool.

This is still there in later Windows versions.

The content is coming from the wininit.exe, which spawns services.exe, which spawns svchost.exe.

It's a fundamental Windows OS concept.

Nice catch btw, I got tripped by this on several occasions

What is happening here "TASK: [config-controller | wait for neutron to start on first controller for NSX] ***"

is that the NSX Edge devices are being deployed out and it cannot complete the task within the allotted time of 900 seconds ( 15 mins )

You should see these tasks in vCenter ( Deploying and configuring the VM's,  they will be called backup-xxxxxxx )

Is your storage not able to process these VM deployments quick enough ? What is the Storage ?

On the VIO Management server :

We can increase the timout value and wait longer for the NSX edges to be deployed out.

Modify the following file:

/var/lib/vio/ansible/roles/config-controller/tasks/neutron.yml

Find the section :

- name: wait for neutron to start on first controller for NSX

and increase the timeout value

Run the "Deploy OpenStack" again.

when i renamed the portgroup, there was no drop.. but now that I look deeper, you're correct, the portgroup comes up as grayed out & (inactive) so if you power cycle/reboot it doesn't reconnect...

I know I did this a few times in my 3.5 or 4.0 environments back in the day with no problem, but it seems in 5.5, they come up as inactive, but it's been quite some time since I tried this.

I know if you rename a PG in vDS, there are no issues, but that's more of a change managed by vCenter where vSS is managed by the host...

I stand corrected.

I have the same issue.  I'm posted here multiple times regarding the issue.  I've also tried contacting VMware Care through twitter and email.  It's totally fallen on deaf ears.  I'm pretty much done using VMware products for personal and professional use.

Interesting! I actually do not see any other tasks at all and the system hasn't even tried to deploy any additional NSX components. I'm running this on a mid-tier Nutanix cluster, so the storage is "okay". Let me poke around a little bit and update again if I can come across anything obvious on the NSX side. Thanks a lot so far. Will report back shortly.

View 5.3 Recompose issue - Boot order of HD changes

I recently inherited a VMware View 5.3 environment and I have an issue when I recompose the systems.  I can deploy a new VM from a recent snapshot but every time I recompose the desktops the HD boot order changes in the BIOS and the system cannot boot until I manually modify the order.   I tried to recompose the system to the previous snapshot and had the same issue.  Thoughts?

Virtual Center stops displaying events in UI or Web Services

Hi,

One of my customer's Virtual Center 6.0 environment, managing approximately 1200 virtual machines and 36 hosts, periodically has events in Virtual Center console (Web or Legacy client) as well as via Web Services cease to update and appear.  Only previous events display, and no new events appear.   Tasks sometimes appear or are significantly delayed.  Restarting vpx temporarily alleviates this.

The server hosting Virtual center is Windows 2012 R2, and its a physical server with 80 GB of memory (40GB consumed).  CPU utilization is not high. Disk space is ok.

We opened a ticket with VMWare support, and identified approximately ~90 million rows in the VPXADMIN.VPX_EVENT_ARG table, and about the same number of rows in  VPXADMIN.VPX_EVENT table.  Each table are about 64GB in size.  Database is Oracle hosted on Exadata.  DBA has already looked at the database and no bottleneck is evident on the database side.  The stored procedure which prunes these tables based on the VCenter retention policy has been running successfully every 6 hours.  Current retention policy is 30 days.  VMware support suggested reducing the retention history down to 7 days.

The customer would like to retain the current retention policy, therefore we are looking for any means to fine tune Virtual Center server to handle this type of event volume.  Also, looking at the data held in these two tables, 95% of them are events related to triggered cpu/memory alarms. Are there any known supported mechanisms to prune these alerts specifically in the above tables, without affecting the rest of the event history?

Thanks for any suggestion.

Hello everyone,

It's possible to view the schema running on browser? The same way when we view on vRO Client.

Please, only show me the way that I search.

I'm working with VMware Orchestrator 6.0

Cheers!!!

Horizon client not fully connecting

$

I have had this come up a couple of times, so far only with users that are trying to connect to our Horizon 6 environment from home.  They'll select a pool to connect to, the connection will start, and they'll get a black screen followed by a Windows loading screen which resizes itself to fit their monitors, then the client will close out completely with a message saying "The connection to the remote computer ended".

Oddly, if I use my credentials to connect, I'll get the same behavior except that instead of the client completely closing out, only the session shuts down.  The client stays open though and I can choose to connect to the pool again without logging back in.  If I do this, it seems to reconnect me to the same session that I had just disconnected from because rather than showing me the Windows splash screen, it puts me into the desktop for a couple of seconds before killing the session again.

In the Horizon log on the client, I see this:

I thought that the bold, red part up there might give some clue as to what's going on... any thoughts?  This is not affecting all external folks (I can connect fine from my laptop as can at least 8 test users), and it doesn't seem to matter whether I use PCoIP or RDP, although RDP just closes with no pop up windows, so I think that we can rule out a firewall problem, but I'm open to suggestions.  I get similar behavior when I try to connect with my iPad though, so that's probably relevant.

Re: Affordable storage advice for ESXi host on Mac Mini hardware ?

If I manually shutdown all VMs when NOT in "Maintenance Mode", then reboot ESXi using vSphere, my VMs all auto-start with a 120 second intra-delay. This is good. When power-fails, I will need a programmatic graceful shut-down before battery runs out.

For vSphere to manually initiate an auto-shutdown, do I need to be in "Maintenance Mode"?  Will the VMs get graceful shut-down if I reboot when NOT in "Maintenance Mode".

When I should use "Maintenance Mode" and why is confusing.  Do I only need to be in "Maintenance Mode" when messing with datastore and such?

Thank you for your help.

hello!

wondering if anyone can help out with this. i'm trying to create a scheduled task that'll generate a daily report of all VMs in vcenter.

the info i'm looking to include is...

VM Name

CPU Count

Guest OS

Primary IP address

DNS hostname

VM Memory

Power State

Provisioned Size

Used Storage

Cluster Name

Data Center Name

VM Folder Path (ex. /Accounting/Project1)

Host Name

trying to get such a report ran daily and dumped into a folder with date as filename. i'm able to get this report below from solarwinds easily, but i'm having difficulty getting it out of powercli

Re: vRO 7 Server Side Client Errors

Hi,

I've got the same issue on Win81SP1 with Java 1.8.0_66 (64bit).

Running the vRO client on W2012R2 with Java 1.7.0_67 (64bit) the System.log is visible.

What's also strange is the "Server build number mismatch" message on my Win81 desktop while starting the vRO client.

That's for now.
