Apologies for this vague request. But I would like some advice on how to actually go about doing the following step by step; (Basically I am taking on a 3rd line Wintel role and not done these tasks before so going to learn the hard way on the job. But I would appreciate any help and advice. We have all started somewhere so please share you experience. I would be ever so grateful)

Requirements;

Using VMware vSphere to deploy new servers and engage with vendors to support applications installs and configurations

What are the key things to starting this? I mean what are common best practices to creating a new VM server via VSphere

Setup Server maintenance tasks and document procedures

What sort of typical tasks do we set up here exactly? how and where?

Refining monitoring systems

How do we refine monitoring systems?

VDI Skills (VMware Horizon) to configure and refine desktop images and GPO Policies

I am confused. Isnt SCCM used to deploy system OS? How does creating a VM VDI differ from creating an OS using SCCM? Is it a case of either deploy the OS via SCCM or VMware?

It appears that if a host is assigned membership in at least one vDS via its host profile, then on stateless boot the host removes vmk0 and tries to re-create it. This appears to happen regardless of the configuration defined in the "Host port group" section of the host profile, and regardless of the specifics of any vDS configuration. Simply having a vDS membership defined seems to trigger it.

This behavior can be observed in the hostprofiletrace.log. Note that this host profile is completely empty except for the single default vSwitch0, a default vmk0, default netstack, and a simple default vDS with one uplink on a different vmnic than vSwitch0. Everything else in the host profile is disabled. The logs below are from ESXi 6.5, but I suspect the behavior would be the same on other verisons.

Where this becomes a severe problem is when any additional vmknics are defined in the host profile on different networks, for example adding a vmknic for vMotion. In this scenario, the vmk0 adapter is removed, but doesn't get re-created, apparently because the other vmknics aren't cleaned up, leaving the host in a crippled and invalid state for the process to continue. What I find strange is that there doesn't appear to be a logged esxcli attempt to re-create vmk0 and instead the final error looks like it's from a SOAP call.

The above examples were using DHCP for vmk0 and vmk1, with vmk1's network not having a valid scope. I just left it as DHCP for simplicity's sake. Different error text is logged when assigning static IPs, but the overall behavior is the same. It won't re-create vmk0 because the logic improperly handles the existence of vmk1. With static IPs, it throws errors about the gateway from the default netstack or host port group not being on the same network as the leftover vmk1 interface.

I think this behavior may be driven by /lib64/python3.5/site-packages/hostprofiles/pyEngine/applyConfigSpec.pyc. There are no uncompiled representatations of scripts in this directory left in the ESXi install, so I ran them through a decompiler. This one seems to have the most logic in it, but I'm not Python literate enough to discern something as simple as an 'if dvs re-create vmk0' type code block. The decompiler did have trouble specifically with the NetEsxCli function, but I suspect it is related more to the syntax of running the esxcli command rather than logic direction.

Has anyone successfully worked around this behavior without making design compromises or shifting configuration away from host profiles?

Are there any VMware developers out there who can explain this behavior and provide an ETA on a fix?

1. Did you change you host name after you install agent.

2. Was your temple a clone machine which agent build had been installed in it.

- no, I upgraded the view agent to 7.2 on the same template that work with 7.1 (just did a snapshot before upgrading the agent)

3. Could your script be access when agent inited. I mean if your script was put in NFS, network was ready at that time?

- the script is local: /opt/join_domain.sh in 777 chmod.

normally I should not have to uninstall the agent prior to the upgrade right?

the VCSA 6.5 installation image contains everything what's needed for a new installation, as well as for an upgrade. Simply start the installation, and you will be presented with a choice of either installing or upgrading. As a side note, don't forget to install the required Client Integration Plugin (also included in the Installation image), prior to starting the upgrade.

The Flex config files setting should point to the General folder; you have configured that setting to the parent of General. See Configure the Flex Configuration Files Setting for more information.

Versions involved are vRLI 4.5 and vROps 6.6. The vRLI agent is installed on a VM which is being monitored by vROps. Integrations are configured between the two products. One can view the logs of the VM from within vROps successfully. The logs sent by the vRLI agent to vRLI have the correct vROps ID embedded. But when configuring an alert based on a query for this VM that goes to vROps, it never associates the alert inside vROps with the correct object, always with the fallback object. The query was tested with both the "hostname" field or "vmw_vr_ops_id" field, and neither was successful. The alert is configured to fire when less than X events received in Y time. What are some troubleshooting steps to follow in these cases?

I think it is clear that the physical switches are not configured correctly. The vSphere load balancing policy is providing uneven connectivity across physical NICs, some of which are attached to correctly configured ports and some of which are attached to incorrectly configured ports. Bummer you used vDS, makes the problem much harder to find.

There are a variety of ways to diagnose this, but the simplest follows:

1. Place host into maintenance mode
2. Set route "Route based on port ID" as load balancing
3. Rotate through the physical NICS (Uplinks) on the affected vSwitch/Host setting only one NIC at a time as active
4. When you reach the NIC that is not connected, trace it back to the physical port it is connected to, and there is your problem!

When I do this as a diagnostic for customers, I create a vmkernel (vmk) on the affected vSwitch/VLAN/network for each host. This vmkernel is not for any of the usual services, it is just to generate a ping. Then I run the command:

vmkping -c 999 -I vmkX -d -s 1472 10.0.0.1

Where:

• -c is count
• -I (that's eye not ell or one)
• -d is do not fragment
• -s is size (usually 1472 or 8972)
• IP address of gateway or other valid host on network

As I rotate through each of the uplinks for the vmkernel (only one at a time active), I will inevitably find one or more members of a team have incorrect physical configurations!

More often than not, I find problems on Cisco-connected vSphere installations where the network engineer insisted on configuring the ESXi as the destination host, rather than what it actually is: just another hop on the network (with the VM being the destination host!)

If you are able to create VM's without the special characters, that is the best resolution.

I'm struggling to figure out a way to build this as a query and subsequently as an alert. My previous post is involved in this issue. The problem I'm trying to address here is when a host or hosts stop sending logs to Log Insight for one reason or another. The reasons could be various including failure of the agent or syslog daemon, firewall definitions change and block communication, etc. For certain critical infrastructure pieces where log data is the only stateful data that needs to be preserved, having logs are immensely important. For other systems, having logs are similarly important when it comes to troubleshooting and postmortem analysis. The goal here is to build a query/alert that detects when one or multiple hosts stop sending logs to vRLI and then to pass that alert over to vROps associating it with the object which has stopped logging. This could be an ESXi host, vCenter, switch, or VM that has the vRLI agent installed. Creating a 1:1 mapping between host and alert is a simple thing, however this does not scale well and is a maintenance nightmare. Logically, I'd like to create a user-defined tag with a certain value, apply that key-value pair to an agent definition, and build a query/alert that understands for any system that contains that tag to alert when it does not see any logs for a given time period. So far, I'm not finding a way to make this happen other than to create an alert for each and every system that should be "watched". I welcome any thoughts or ideas on how to accomplish this goal.

This is more of a blog post than a discussion. We had an issue where we couldn't send ctrl  + alt + ins to a box and it was removed from the domain so you couldnt RDP either *gasp*.

Vmotion, power off/on , reboot, safe mode.. nothing worked.. so..

Step 1. Open MMC > Add Remove Snap in > Services *Add IP / Name of host unable to log into

Step 2. Locate "Remote Registry Service" ... Start

Step 3. Regedit > File > Connect Network Registry (Enter IP of machine you need to console into)> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System , DisableCAD set to 1 (Control Alt Delete)

---Important part you either need to disonnect to save or it doesnt save (least didnt first time for me)

Step 4. Reboot and Breath a sigh of relief.

Is there any logging that provides information why the redirect shuts down? If you are running this on systems without issue in other environments that have also been patched, it seems to not be the patches, though does not completely rule them out.

Without more information of why it is failing I do not have anything to try.
